Which symptoms actually require splitting the tractor?
Anything living between the engine and the transmission: worn clutch discs, failed pressure plates, throwout and pilot bearings, rear main seals, flywheel work and the IH torque amplifier. Linkage problems, master and slave cylinders on the models that have them, and many PTO issues fix from outside, which is exactly what the free phone diagnosis exists to sort.
How do I know if my clutch is failing or just needs adjustment?
Adjustment fixes a pedal with wrong free play; it does not fix slipping. If the engine revs under load while ground speed stays put, the disc is done and adjustment only delays the calendar. A grab point that moved to the top of the pedal after years of creep tells the same story. Chatter and squealing point at contamination or bearings, and each has its own answer on the phone.
Can a split really happen in a Wisconsin winter?
Yes, routinely. A wind-tight shed is the requirement, not a heated one, and winter is the planned-work season here because the field machines are parked while the chore tractors work hardest. The winter slots go to the dairy and beef operations first, and booking a marginal clutch in December beats an emergency in January.
Are you insured to work on my farm?
Yes, and insurance certificates are available on request before any work starts, which commercial farms should always ask of anyone touching their equipment. On the parts side: clutch kits and bearings for common Ford, IH, Deere, Massey and Kubota models come from the same national ag-parts suppliers the dealers use, and nothing opens until the parts are in hand.
Is repairing an old tractor smarter than replacing it?
Usually, and the arithmetic is short: a $2,500 clutch against $15,000 or more for a comparable used machine whose history you do not know. The exceptions are real, a tired engine on top of a dead clutch, rot in the frame, and the phone diagnosis is where we tell you honestly which side of the line your tractor sits on.
Do you work on hydrostatic drives?
No, and we say it plainly: hydrostatic transmissions have no clutch to split for and their repairs belong to a different specialty. If your compact is HST and the drive acts up, we will tell you what the symptom suggests and where to take it, free.
What horsepower range do you cover?
Compact tractors up through utility and row-crop machines around 120 horsepower, which covers the working fleet on most Dane County farms. The bigger articulated and high-horsepower machines need tooling in a different class, and we would rather name that limit than learn it on your tractor.
How should I store a tractor so the clutch survives the layoff?
Block the pedal down. A disc held away from the flywheel cannot rust itself stuck over a damp season, and a stick wedged between pedal and seat costs nothing. It is the single cheapest piece of clutch advice in this trade, and half the stuck-clutch calls every spring are the tractors that did not get it.
